Deneysville is on the border of the Freestate in
South Africa and is only about 100km from
Johannesburg. It
is often referred to as the gateway to the Vaal Dam and
is a mecca for boating enthusiasts of all sorts.
Deneysville was established during the period
of the building of the Vaal Dam wall and
was used as a stop over point by the old Britannia Airways
flying boats. It has now grown into a thriving center
with modern residential developments and many B&B's,
guest houses, self-catering cottages and restaurants
opening up in the picturesque village.
The Vaal Dam plays host to The Round The Island Race,
one of the biggest inland regattas in world and also the Big
Boat Regatta which
is hosted
by
Pam Golding
Properties in Deneysville and rivals most off shore races with
the shear number of big yachts taking part.
Other large boating events include Keelboat
Week, the Bayshore 200km jetski race, and the
Bayshore Marina
Vaal Dam Treasure Hunt.
The Vaal Dam has over 800kms of coast line
and covers an area in excess of three hundred square kilometers.
It is South Africa's biggest dam by area and has it's own
island (almost 5kms long) that was used for secret meetings
during the old Apartheid government days.
The Dam is a bird lover's paradise with over
a 240 different species of birds finding their homes here.
The annual bird count which takes place in
January each year attracts birders from all around the country. In
2006 over 97,000 birds were recorded.
Visit Deneysville and the Vaal Dam for a few days and found
out why it has become Jo'burg's favourite escape!
