The charming town of Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, South
Africa is situated in the heart of the Highlands
Meander on the Panorama Route.
It provides the perfect stopover if you are driving from
Johannesburg to
the Kruger Park and offers superb hiking, horse
riding, camping and fishing as well as many idyllic
spots for simply relaxing and soaking up the natural beauty.
The area is well known for its waterfalls, clear streams,
lakes and the abundance of arum lilies and
wild flowers and is a favoured romantic getaway for couples
seeking a weekend break from the big city.
Dullstroom is also one South Africa's premier fly-fishing
destinations.
Two species of trout - Rainbow and Brown Trout are found in
abundance in the numerous dams, rivers and streams in the area.
Anglers have a wide range of specialist tackle shops to choose
from
and can pick up expert advice on flies, rods and reels as well
as the best fishing spots for each time of year.
Two popular
and easily accessible locations are the Dullstroom
Municipal Dam and the Suikerboschkop Dam. Many other
dams in the vicinity offer good catches and most
resorts in the area provide their own dams for fishing.
Dullstroom and its vicinity offer a decent selection of
accommodation, including bed and
breakfasts, self-catering cottages, up-market
lodges and hotels. You'll
also find plenty of fine culinary fare at more than a dozen
restaurants and eateries. And don't forget to try the trout!
This delicate freshwater fish is a gourmet's
delight, especially
when enjoyed with a bottle of crisp, local white wine.
Bird watchers will also be surprised by the
proliferation of species in the area. Try to pay a visit to
The Dullstroom
Bird of Prey and Rehabilitation Center. Established
in 1997, its aim is to educate the public and promote an awareness
of the plight of endangered raptor species.
Birders can also spend a day at The Verloren Vallei
Nature Reserve, an international RAMSAR wetlands site.
It is the only habitat
where
all three of
the world's
endangered cranes are found. The Blue Crane, South
Africa's national bird, is found here, along with
the Wattled
Crane and Crowned Crane.
Dullstroom sits at an altitude of 2100 meters which means it
is often shrouded in thick mist. But this all
adds to its remote rural atmosphere, and what better way to
spend a weekend than sipping a good Cabernet and reading a
book in front of a roaring log fire.
