South Africa's wine tradition goes back over 350 years and has its roots in the classic European styles of France, Germany and Italy. Cabernet Sauvignon comprises the majority of red grape varieties presently grown, followed by pinotage and then shiraz. Discerning buyers should sample Nederburg, Rupert and Rothschild, Hamilton Russel, Haute Cabriere, Allesverloren and Meerhof. The most popular whites are Chenin Blanc and Columbard. In the past few years Sauvignon Blanc has become more prolific than Chardonnay because of its larger range of styles and quality levels.
